This weekend, a home designed by modernist architect Marcel Breuer will hit the market in Andover. 

Named for its original owners, “The Grieco House” offers three bedrooms and three bathrooms in 3,721 square feet on 1.07 acres. The Janovitz + Tse Team of ModernMass at Compass is handling the listing at 81 Sunset Rock Road, which will come with a $1,500,000 price tag. 

The total property is comprised of two lots: 81 and 83 Sunset Rock Road. The home is built on 81, allowing 83 to provide landscaped views. Most of the building’s exterior is wrapped in stone, while the cantilevered portion is covered in vertical board-and-batten siding. A stone pathway leads up to the binuclear house, where the living and sleeping quarters are connected by an entry space. 

The living areas follow an open floor plan. Strip windows draw a line across the living and dining room, pulling in abundant natural light, while a fieldstone fireplace helps create a partial wall between the two spaces. Adjacent to that is the kitchen, with a grill and stainless steel appliances, including an electric stove. The current owners started restoring the home. They have renovated the kitchen and refurbished all of the original woodwork . This section of the home also includes a sunroom with radiant heat. 

On the other end of the home, two bedrooms feature custom built-in closets and cabinets, sliding glass doors to a terrace, and — for the primary bedroom — an en-suite bathroom. The home’s bathrooms boast original tiles in bright hues like yellows, reds, and greens.

A pop of colorful paint behind the banister leads down to the lower level, where there’s a bedroom being utilized as a study. This floor also offers a Brutalist wine cellar and an attached two-car, heated garage. 

Born in Hungary in 1902, Breuer attended the famous Bauhaus school in Germany. His works span the former home of the Whitney Museum in New York City and the University of Massachusetts Amherst Campus Center to the ever-popular Breuer, or Cesca chair . He moved to the United States in 1937, when Bauhaus founder Walter Gropius invited him to teach at Harvard’s Graduate School of Design. 

Breuer received a number of awards and honors during his career, including a Gold Medal from the American Institute of Architects in 1968 and the Grande Medaille d’Or from l’Academie d’Architecture in France in 1976. He died in 1982 and is buried next to his home in Wellfleet. 

Private showings of “The Grieco House” begin Friday, June 17.
